this is what you get

This morning it sounds increasingly like they’ve rolled out of the suburbs and taken back the London Mayoralcy from Red Ken, placing it in the unsavoury inky-pinky hands of Boris. Yup, he’s a funny guy – probably fantastic company over a scotch or a line of charlie – but would you really leave him in charge of your house and/or kids for a week while you went on holiday? Simply, no fucking way. Some prime Boris for ya…

“That is the best case for Bush; that, among other things, he liberated Iraq. It is good enough for me.”

“Labour’s appalling agenda, encouraging the teaching of homosexuality in schools, and all the rest of it.”

“The best fate for Africa would be if the old colonial powers… scrambled once again in her direction; on the understanding that this time they will not be asked to feel guilty.”

“I think I was once given cocaine but I sneezed so it didn’t go up my nose. In fact, it may have been icing sugar.”

“Both the minimum wage and the Social Charter would palpably destroy jobs.”

Finished watching The Wire yesterday, got through the final ever episode and then dived straight back into earlier episodes of Season 5 because Rifa hasn’t seen most of it. Like only the very best TV, it’s just as good the second time around. Without spoiling anything, the climactic few episodes are almost impossibly moving. Even as they wind down, they’re not pulling punches.

Most of my new songs are really upbeat. I wonder how the next record will end up sounding, since all the demos sound so psychotically positive (and acid-fried) compared to everything on Capital. Three animal songs already down and there’s a whole bunch of lovey dovey stuff as well, most of which will inevitably get rejected for sheer sickliness. Probably just relieved because I won’t have to live in London-Under-Boris.

  1. Fucking son of a cock swallower! If Boris Johnson becomes mayor I will never EVER take an interest in politics ever. How can anyone take him seriously? He doesn’t even brush his fucking hair! If he can’t be bothered to sort his appearance out before leaving the house, how the hell can I trust him to run my city?

On the plus side though, at least there will be continual hilarity at the ridiculous things he says. The cunt.

Looking forward to hearing the new songs.

  2. There’s a semi-prequel to The Wire called The Corner – not seen it yet, still have Season 5 to get through too, I just feel sad about watching it as then it’s over and have been watching it since it first aired on HBO many many years back.

As for Boris, well I don’t buy the bumbling idiot routine – the man was elected as an MP and edited a national magazine for years. I do think he’s dangerously right-wing, but Ken was viewed as dangerously left-wing by the right, and in 8 years has managed to bring in the congestion charge (which cost so much to implement, the attached public transport improvements are minimal) and free bus passes for kids (nice idea in theory, that wasn’t thought through).

Given that’s the sum total of his major achievements when backed by the party in power, I really don’t see Boris be able to do much to screw things up when he doesn’t even have that. Boris won’t be able to break london for the same reason Ken wasn’t able to turn it into a socialist utopia.

Net result is that we keep Boris is a fairly ineffectual position so there’s no chance of him troubling the Tory front bench should they be victorious in the next general election.

(Of course, the real issue here is term limits, there’s not many that really want Boris in, but there’s a lot that are really pissed off with Livingstone, and giving him a third term and an even stronger mandate wasn’t what a lot of people wanted to do. Were there a two-term limit, and Labour forced to run someone else against Boris, I reckon they’d have won it)

  3. Deanio… I agree with not mistaking Boris for his buffoon caricature, the quotes weren’t meant to imply that – more imply exactly what you’re saying about unreconstructed conservatism. Frightening – especially with regard to the majority being fooled by Cameron’s soft style / hard content. I don’t agree at all with how little you think Ken achieved – but don’t feel strongly enough to get into details – plus I’m too grateful to you for flagging up The Corner. I’m on it.

Evan, I only just found your email from today – will reply properly tomorrow bro. Loved the stag photos.

  4. The anti-Boris dossier (http://clients.squareeye.com/uploads/compass/documents/BorisJohnsonCompassFileFINAL.pdf) makes for some interesting reading, though it’s also interesting how little of it is actually relevent to the London Mayor job – at the end of the day it’s still just a local mayoral election, and while it’s for a larger area, the politics of local government tend to skew less easily along the left-right divide anyways.

Fair enough on Ken, I haven’t followed things that closely, it’s just those two issues are all anyone mentions when the debate comes up. You should probably know that while my personal politics are liberal, I tend to take a more tactical long-term stance when it comes to who I’d support – for example barring any major changes, I’d support the Tories at the next general election on the basis that a 1st term Tory goverment won’t do any more damage than a 4th-term ‘New Labour’ one and it should in turn force Labour back to thier roots and becoming a party worth having back in power at the following election… I probably over-analyse things but until we get a fair (PR) based electoral system, voting for the party who’s policies you agree with is rarely the best choice. I mostly just wish the Lib Dems hadn’t imploded when they got even the slightest whiff of power.

If you have any problems getting hold of The Corner drop me an e-mail.
